Like A Hungry Baby

by Ken Balsley - Not entered

Like a hungry baby crying in the middle of the night
It wakes us up
BEEP
A long pause,
BEEP
I glance at the clock
3:33
AM
BEEP
Is that your beeper I ask?
"I don't know", she said, now wide awake.
I roll out bed,
search for the beeper in the dark
waiting for the sound again to guide the way.
BEEP
"It's not my beeper," she said, getting out of bed and turning on the light.
BEEP
I go back to bed.
She'll take care of it now.
She fumbles around on the table, making some small noise, then returns to bed.
"What was it," I ask?
"Just a low battery warning on the cell phone," she said. "I put it back in its cradle to be recharged."
"Just like a hungry baby," I think.

Reason for writing:

I was amazed at how much the beeping of the cell phone battery in the early morning hours reminded me of the crying of my child when he was young. It just seemed to lend itself to something in writing. This poem was as close as I could come.
I'm on the cusp of Scorpio.
Thanks for the opportunity to submit my poem.
