Salt spray in crisp air, Crash of waves upon the rocks - Bierstadt painted these.
Reason for writing:
Standing among the ruins of Sutro Baths, my friend James
Shepard and I gazed out at the winter waves exploding against
Seal Rock. The angle from which we viewed the sea revealed
the distinctive hole in seal rock. The very next day we
were visiting the DeYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park and Jim
was telling me how much he admired the work of
Albert Bierstadt. We came around a corner and there was
Bierstadt's painting, "Seal Rock" from 100 years ago. It
was exactly the same view that had thrilled us the
day before.
