SONNET V

by Byron Keith Mills - Not entered

HOW COULD I ANOTHER PEDESTAL SEEK?

How could I another pedestal seek
When thy love did breath upon my open fire?
Thy velvety touch made my heart grow weak;
Brought each passing year, unrequited desire.
For this love so bold ne'er knew what sorrow
Might find what we did assume enchanted...
Nor embrace the wounds we hoped not to borrow
From sorrowful fate, untimely granted!
Infectious curse from the depths ascended
As determined to wrest our souls apart.
Helpless were we, for this dire fate intended
That in flesh and blood, we dare depart!
As I think on thee, wherever thou art...
Yon pedestal thereon, burns this broken heart!!

Reason for writing:

I saw a movie on lifetime a few weeks ago, about a family
infected with HIV; it gave me a rough idea of what I wanted
to say in verse about such a real-life scenario.
