ON LETTING DOWN YOUR GUARD

by CANCER - Not entered

Don't do it! Not once ..
Regardless of the joy that fuels you,
The anticipation that fools you,
That thing that urges you on ..
All wrong!
To risk, to feel, to say "I love you"
And have him respond, "but I'm a scalded duck"
And, sinking,
You know he doesn't trust
Your balm for his particular burn ..
Your panacea for his particular pain,
Or that you've been scalded too.
Don't do it! Not twice ..
Keep it on ice.
When you've felt nothing for so long
And then you do, you remember
Why you felt nothing for so long.

Reason for writing:

This was written as a series of three frantic "morning after" poems. They all speak for themselves. LOL
