To My Familiar Stranger

by Jane K - Not entered

Here is what I tried to explain;
Here is something that begins itself;
Here is what you never stop saying;
Here ends the guided tour.
I watch you like a hypnotized child,
Slack-jawed and heavy lidded and sorrowed.
These are the words that I have chosen.
I am half sick with familiarity
And these words come haltingly
and hard won.
I want to love a stranger
and I do.
All of these lines are written to the boy
with the colorless eyes
and the smile I have never seen.
You are everyone I have never known.
I never want us to be close.
Leave my ignorance and my fancies to themselves;
Lock all the doors,
And let the fairytale starve itself
Until I become wise enough to know
That I have invented what I think you are.
But until then,
Let me be sustained by my lies.

Reason for writing:

    The poem explains itself - unrealistic passion for someone that I pass in the hall and never speak to.
