If I had known that Jesus would be born In the straw of my stable I would have made an Inn for him, But no, I did not have enough money. If I had enough money, I would have built A grand inn for Mary to deliver Jesus, But when they arrived all the inns were full, And I must admit, mine would have been too. If I had known Mary and Joseph were coming, I would have cleaned the stable And shooed all the animals into the night, But I made them stay, all close together. If I had known Jesus would be born To the forlorn looking couple Who came late at night to my door, I would have let them stay in my house. If I had known Angels were in the fields And shepherds were rejoicing like David, I would not have become annoyed At the strong cries from the newborn baby. If I had known the Savior was this baby, I would have gone out to worship him. But I stayed in my bed and covered my ears And tried to sleep on Christmas night.
Reason for writing:
I wrote this poem to illustrate that Jesus was so much one of us that his birth was not recognizable. All of Israel was waiting for the birth of the son of David, and if they had only been warned that he would be born then and there, the inn-keepers would have jumped at the opportunity to let Mary and Joseph stay for free. Or would they? This is the paradox; we have no proof even today that Jesus is the savior of the world. All we can go on is faith. So, this poem is about faith and what the lack of faith can do to somebody.Birth sign: Not entered
