America Shattered

by Tina Tzaperas/Cancer - Not entered

She felt the explosion
	down deep in her soul.
Then her skies filled with darkness
from a fire out of control.

She couldn't believe it happened,
	she didn't understand.
This wasn't supposed to happen,
not on her soil, not on her land.

Then the truth came rushing at her
and it became more than clear,
When she saw so many faces
	streaked with blood and tears.

Her innocence was gone,
	blown away by the blast.
Gone in an instant,
	shattered with the glass.

Streaming down her face
	was a river of tears,
And the lump in her throat
	was a mountain of fear.

Who could do such a thing,
	it was hard to comprehend.
Was it worth the innocent children,
	her loved ones, her friends?

She will never be the same,
	she is filled with despair.
And the ache in her heartland,
is almost too much to bear.

Reason for writing:

I wrote this poem 2 days after the Oklahoma City bombing.
I cried every time I saw clips on the news or news magazine
shows. It was heart-breaking to me that something this
horrible could happen in our heartland.
