PEOPLE AND THINGS

PEOPLE AND THINGS

We're married to things
And divorced from people
The church is empty
We admire the steeple

I won't look at you
Don't you look at me
Together we stare
At the color TV

Our talk built bridges
Silence tore them down
We purchased a stereo
And turned up the sound

I reached out my hand
And you held it so tight
But now we touch buttons
And say it's alright

We're married to things
And divorced from people
The church is empty
We admire the steeple

Reason for writing:

This poem was inspired by my concern about the materialistic
nature of our society. We devote more time to things (which
are dead) than we do cultivating relationships with people.
