On The Road

by Michael Dowdin - Not entered

My name is Ted Turtle, I like it when I am on the road.
I drive my rig non-stop and take pride in my large carload.
It is important to you as a consumer; whether or not I deliver.
In my home, to my lovely wife and kids; I am the law giver.
My main goal is to complete my trip; this I must accomplish.
In picking up my load, I try to be fair; instead of being hoggish.
I take pride in maintaining my home away from home; my rig.
I have been driving for thirty years, coast to coast; gig to gig.
Every assignment is different in size and content; no two alike.
I like it better, when on a long straight road, like the turnpike.
People get excited, when I pass them in the wind and blow my horn.
Maybe it is because, I am a good looking, tall, strong, gentle Capricorn.
Go ahead and get your papers ready, cause I'm coming on the clock.
By the time you look up; Pearly May, my rig is at your dock.

Reason for writing:

This poem about a truck driver is one of many
included in my first book, which I wrote last year.
I don't think that truck drivers get enough praise
for what they do. They were on my mind heavily
last year before the 'Storm of 96'. I have included
poems about truck drivers in all of my books of
poetry. As I think they are doing a great job.
