The Hanging

by Marianne - Not entered

The hangman speaks to the prisoner
"Get down on your knees...and pray
Ask - before death...to be forgiven
for pillaging the Emperors' cabriolet."

"Our King has callously condemned you
to die - by means of noose."
The halter is thrown aloft, in a tree
while he struggles to break loose.

As the aperture is positioned
around his neck, he cries
"I'm guilty of no wrongdoing
absolve me...it's all lies!"

But his petition is neglected
and the rope is tightly wrenched
causing his to gasp for air
while blood from his face is drenched.

Townsfolk watched in amazement
as the hangman released the cord
He nodded to the King - who then smiled
and the crowd bellowed, and roared.

Said the King, "Innocent, or guilty?
no one truly knows
But those who filch, or swindle
will too die - by way of the gallows."
