That Day

by Natalie J. Case - Not entered

In perverse politeness pausing
upon the threshold in dismay
he peered in upon our embrace
on that bright mid-summer’s day
In the arms of my musical mentor,
my lover of the moment, you might say,
and he, my poet, my heart,
in but a heartbeat went away
The very life within my being
fled from me on that day
and never again my soul did breathe
nor my lips a word did say
All left of me this pen will write,
my brokenness display,
that he might know, my love, my life
ended on that day

Reason for writing:

without thinking, I drove away someone I didn't know I loved
