A PERSON/ A PAPER/ A PROMISE

by unknown - Aquarius

Once on a yellow paper with green lines, he wrote a poem...& he
called it "Spot"
Because that was the name of his dog & that's what it was
all about...
& his teacher gave him an "A" & a gold star - & his mother
pinned it to the kitchen wall - showed it to his aunt.
& that was the year his sister was born & his parents kissed
all the time...& the little girl around the cornere
Sent him a postcard signed with a row of X's
& his father tucked him into bed every night - & he was
always there.

Then on white paper with blue lines, he wrote another poem...
& he called it "Autumn" because that was the season it was &
that's what it was al labout.
& his teacher gave him an "A" & told him to write more
clearly.
& his mother told him not to hang it on the kitcheen wall
because it had just been painted.
& that was the year his sister was got glasses & his parents
never kissed anymore.
& the little girl around the corner laughed when he fell
down with his bike.
& his father got mad when he cried to be tucked in.

On a piece of paper torn from a notebook, he tried another
poem...
& he called it "?" because that was his big concern.
& his professor gave him an "A" & a hard, searching look,
& his mother didn't say anything at all because he never
showed it to her.
& that was the year he caught his sister necking on the porck.
& the little girl around the corner wore too much makeup
So that he'd laugh when he kissed her, but he kissed her
anyway...
& he tucked himself into bed @ 3 in the morning with his
father snoring soundly in the next room.

& that's why, on the back of a matchbook cover, he tried
another poem...
& he callled it "Absolutely Nothing" because that's what it
was all about.
& he gave himself an "A" & a slash on each wrist & hung it
on the bathroom wall because he couldn't make it to the
kitchen.
