The Bridge

The Bridge

Today, like a magnetic force,
I was drawn to the mountain and the bridge, of course.
I placed down a blanket and cast my eyes out,
Trying once again to see what my life is now all about.

Dogwood boughs hang low - their crucifixes now shed
Pine trees sway, their seeds falling to their new found beds.
Wood ducks bobble, wanting to be fed by any friend or foe.
A hawk soars on breezes high above my head bowed low.

The bridge of weathered wood stands quiet and grand.
Its planks smooth to the eye but rough to the hand.
Pegged, lattice boards give their strength to the roof above
Cedar shakes guard the path of those who know love.

Granite stones once of the mountain - massive and whole,
Now cut and pieced to support what is so beautiful and old.
And beneath the thick floor planks, lies a beautiful lake
Behold its reflective powers, the movements it does make.

This lake of clear, cool, rippling water holds much more.
Look very closely and see the sky....who's at heaven's door.
For now in this time and place,
God beckons for us to again see His face.

Just two of His children, we were once here
Sharing a love so special and dear.
Now, though apart, we will always in love be,
Yet praying that God will give strength to you and me.

Here, on this bridge on a day just past,
Two lovers peered through those wooden slats.
Their bodies close and hands clasped tight.
Their eyes were filled with love's sunlight.

Once again, I read your words in blue pen on white,
Thanking me for allowing us to make things right.
Oh, how the tears begin to fill my eyes
I raise my arms, my heart to the skies.

Then, distantly, unbelievably what do I hear?
The chimes playing "You Light Up My Life" so melodic and clear.
What can we glean from a bridge, and a song,
Is there a meaning here to help us along?

Now, as shadows lengthen and evening nears,
I fold up my blanket and wipe away my tears.
But never will I forget the day not long past
when I shared with you what will forever last.

And more days, in the future, I will come here to be
When I will be remembering your love and you with me.
Now as I say goodnight my love, my man, my friend
Know that I do not ever want our world to end.

But it doesn't matter in which world we reside
God is always by our side.
He has seen the erring of our ways,
And His arms are reaching out to us again today.

I will love you forever and completely - that's true
But God's will is another life for me - for you.

Reason for writing:

Being with the love of my life on a covered bridge in Georgia
