CHILDHOOD SWEETHEARTS

by Norb Walker Sag - Not entered

We fell in love, and didn't know it,
Jean was 10, with golden hair,
I was 12, and blondish to,
Her face of beauty, and skin so fair.

I like to remember,
Those wonderful years.
My heart was longing,
To be close to her.

This bashful young boy,
To get her attention;
Would walk by her house,
For recognition.

I liked to whistle,
Like a lovebird.
The neighbors knew,
I hoped Jean heard.

Sometimes I walked,
Accross the street.
For her to see me,
So we could meet.

To be with Jean,
I would conspire.
Those times together,
Was my desire.

My heart was filled,
With love so shining.
A love so strong,
It kept me pining.

I always felt,
While in her presence.
A special bond,
A real love essence.

When I was sixteen,
With friends in a car.
We picked her up,
Her house so far.

We dropped her off,
I walked her home.
Then came to the car,
Never feeling alone.

I said to my buddies,
Without even thinking.
"I'll marry that girl",
Bells will be ringing.

She was special to me,
I admired her greatly,
And with those feelings,
Our future showed brightly.

The war years had come,
And threatened our being.
We married inspite,
With vows so reveering.

If we lasted through that,
Then our love would endure.
We could face anything,
That came in the future.

A love that is strong,
Will sustain anything.
For us it did last,
Going on 44 Springs.

Our love still goes on,
During problems galore.
We'll face them together,
Our love is for sure.

What is our secret?
Many lovers still ask.
Respect for each other,
A true love, will last.

I dedicate this poem, which is a true life experience, to my
childhood sweetheart, Jean, who is not only my friend,
but also my wonderful and loving wife. We are going on our
45th Wedding Anniversary, May 17, 1997.
