Bottle (A child's view of adult alcoholism

by Doreen Ambrose-Van Lee (LEO) - Not entered

I will be by your side if you need me night and day,
I will be the one who wrecks your family life is that okay?
I will swerve and curve your emotions and cause you to crash your
car in the street,
I will make you say things that you will soon regret and like a drum on your
children, you will continously beat.
I will make you appear unattractive, as you slowly lose the
ability to constructively think,
I am that 80 proof bottle of poison that you so willingly drink.
I thought that you were a genie when I was a child because of
your unique ability to stay in a bottle,
And I can say and do anything that I want now because I know
that you won't remember this tomorrow.

Reason for writing:

I wrote this poem from personal experience for children that are going
through similiar situations and feel that they are the only ones
living with an alcoholic parent or parents. As a child I really thought that
no one else's family went through it. And when you're going through a
tough time and you feel like no one understands the time becomes longer and harder.
If an alcoholic parent or caretaker reads my poem I want them to see themselves and turn around and
correct their behavior. And if a child is reading my poem, I want them
to know that they are not alone and to tell their parents or
guardians how they feel when they are intoxicated.
