Father

by Doreen Ambrose-Van Lee - Not entered

I was given a past because I bear your name
Your blood flows like a raging river through my veins
I am faced with a presence because I bear your name
But as for a future I must stake my own claim
Through the years on this maiden voyage I have traveled far and wide and met a fine suitor
I have made an addition to my surname in the hyphenated form
But I just can't bring myself to change
I will always bear your name

Reason for writing:

I wrote this poem because I have been married for a number of years
but I can't seem to let go of my maiden name.
