The Silent Rocker

by Patricia Jeffery - Not entered

Grandma had a rocking chair
Sitting in the parlor
Meant for her to sit and rest
And read the almanac.

Not a day did grandma use it
To while away the time
"Too much work," she'd always say
"Like baking and the sewing."

Grandma just used the rocker
When devotion time came around
To read some verses from God's word
And close her eyes in prayer.

Rocking back and forth,
She pondered what she read
Until the darkness fell.
Then the chair stood still.

Reason for writing:

I thought that my mother wrote some wonderful poetry. She entered it into a poetry contest.
