MARINE

by N. Griffin - Not entered

Mollusks underneath, blistered feet kicking and splashing

    the foaming, raging

Aquatic wonder, I follow the fiddler's music and journey

north, guided by the single, pointing limb of the

    starfish, toward the glowing

Reef where bathing bands of sunlight bleach the pebbled

terrace. On my knees, I frantically dig through

hundreds of rocks, inspecting, discarding, searching for

my name. ('Tis a promise from the

Island Keeper that he would write my name upon a white

stone.) Victoriously rising to my feet, I tightly

clench the engraved stone inside my fist, and as the

ebbing tide bids me farewell, I weep. My rehabilitated

soul shall never forget this replenishing, refreshing,

    renewing

Nautical

Expedition.

Reason for writing:

The poem was primarily an assingment given to me in a
Creative Writing class. Beginning with the Acrostic,
MARINE, I began each line of poetry with each letter of the
word, "marine." After much criticism and many suggestions
from the professor and students, this is what I came up with.
The Island Keeper is a reference to God---in scripture, He
speaks of writing names of his children upon a white stone.
