Oh death, sweet death, infinity Into the darkness banish me. Hold me fast within the grave, From groping hands my body save. Rend from me the pains of yore, These I wish to know no more. All my aching wounds redress, Heal them with forgetfulness. Whisper gently in my ear, Of sweet things I wish to hear. Of things I can never touch, Things I miss so very much. Sun on hills and fishes gills, Joyous times of boyish thrills. Of moon and star, sky and cloud, Flowers bright and waters loud. Of bird, beast and butterfly, Lovely things that never die. Leslie and her hair of gold, Such soft hands I'll never hold. Born of sunshine, wrought of pearls, Prettier than other girls. High as heaven, bright as sun, To place with her there are none. All 'neath sky and all above Shall sing praise for her I love. Eyes as blue as heaven's sky, Wonder holds all passers-by. But she can't see her with me, So sad I shall forever be. No joy in me she ever found, Her heart to one was tightly bound. Oh death, please death, hear my prayer, Hear and take my body there. Open Sheol's gates of lead, Make for me a cold hard bed. Tell me tales of bygone years, From my eyes wipe the tears. With your liquor drown the pain, Drive it from my throbbing brain. My only friend may you be, From her grasp set me free. No longer shall I see that face, That perfect holy queen of grace. Who's to say she'll ever know To what place I had to go. A cold hard place among the stones, A place filled with dead men's bones. Joyous shall she always be, Eternally without me.
