Small, nurturing breasts Two lush hills filled with life and love Child-bearing hips Spreading out like waves breaking in the vast ocean And thighs - Those redwood trees standing tall and big and proud My body in the mirror My Mom's body A Woman's body The body of Earth Filled with a yearning for peacefulness and tranquility A spirit seeming so fragile Yet it is so strong to live through the violence and ruin of centuries gone by The pollution, the wars, the nuclear bombs, the toxic waste, The rape, the abuse - both physical and mental The violation of My spirit, My body Every Woman's spirit and body Even Earth herself is being desecrated, Torn apart, trampled on by the enormous feet of careless destruction Daily I hear the sobs of Women, the sobs of Nature Both brought on by cruelness and neglect The redwoods still stand strong, but they feel the power of sadness in the rain And the ocean waves mingle with the tears of Earth The green and grassy hills take it into the ground, into their roots We all hear the cries of Women echoing in our roots
Reason for writing:
What inspired me to write this poem was a deep reflection I experienced while lying on the beach during my vacation. I studied the waves and thought upon the beauty and strength of Nature. I thought about the everyday neglect and destruction that the Earth receives. For example, a few beaches that are in my area were closed down due to needles lying on the sand. This example lead to more thoughts and outcomes of human neglect. Likewise, injustices among Women are also neglected or forgotten. People realize what is going on but choose to ignore the problem. As a Woman who respects the Earth, I feel it is my obligation not to ignore the problems that we face and to bring up this subject to others. Thank you for your time in lending an ear to hear my concern.Birth sign: Not entered
