Broken Butterfly

by Arielle - Not entered

	Broken Butterfly

Seagulls soared the open sky
As I set off to master foreign lands
The mass of local faces blurred
into one last photograph
awaiting in an album too soon to open

Breathing in the sweet sea air
As if each breath may be my last
A toxicating blend of salt water and tears
encompasses my mind completely
Almost inebriating me from these new found liberties

From waving hands and commending words
I departed from the shores of my youth
Shamefully observing the lone woman at the edge of the flock
Stationed there like an intricately carved statue, her haunting glance
a reminder of bitter memories and transformations irreversible by time

Cloaked in diaphanous white garments
Forcing her emerald eyes to meet my glance
Dark shadows cocoon her delicate face
Trapping her inside the hollow cavity
Banded by infinite rings of a strength I cannot begin to comprehend

Thoughts reversed to a foolish time
And like the treasures caught upon our decrepit nets
She lives within his sturdy glass prison
Her frenzied wings subside with season, and disheartened
She falls to a permanent foundation with eyes clenched tightly

And she stands, anchored to conventional grounds
Barely blinking as unruly weeds crawl across her pale thighs
Her facade faded and cracked years before her rightful time
She stares numbly as I spread my ardent wings
Never looking down

Reason for writing:

This is about my friend who despite her young age (19) has
put her entire life into the hands of her boyfriend when he
asked her to marry him. She gave up all of her dreams. This
is about how I left to accomplish all my goals while she
stayed at home, alone, manipulated and tragically possessed.
