An American Valentine

by spielman (virgo) - Not entered

He drove on down to the local grocery
waiting patiently in line to pay
as other men scurried about, after six
for Twelve.
Other men purused near-empty racks
of pastel colored rectangular and heart-shaped wishes.
He waited still, in line to pay
as she commented: My favorite.
He paid for his pint
and departed for home
alone
with Cherry-chunk, ice cream...
his favorite.

Reason for writing:

Set in a midwestern suburban grocery store...
a friend and I observed in the grocery..where many go to
purchase last minute roses or cards for their significant
others..well, this one is about the trouble some men go to
on valentines and also infers the lonlieness one can feel
on occasion.. regardless of gender. Hopefully the poem is
also illustrative of the difficulty for the two sexes to
find one another in the 90's.
