A Family That Was

by April Joy, Gemini - Not entered

into a family I was born
in, but not apart of
a family that was
but wasn’t

dad the center of the family
the cause of so much pain
felt your hand
felt your belt
the caress of rage

what made you hate
the children of your loins
yet hate the mother more
and hurt the children because

fearful dark childhood
with little to redeem
dim memories of past
a family that was
but wasn’t

Reason for writing:

    in memory of my childhood
