A Lesson Well Learned

by Brian William Skinner - Not entered

Chivalrous actions reap mutual respect,
Or so t'was taught to me and so I'd expect.
Venomous pain however, was swiftly returned,
My heart it left smitten, my soul, in whole, burned.
A promise made, broken, a friendship destroyed,
These tears are left token, of love that's now void.
Forever from her, in fate I depend,
Feelings once felt, are absent since then,
These shields that I've risen, boldly defend,
This will I've acquired that shall never bend.

Reason for writing:

I wrote this poem shortly after my ex-fiancee'/girlfriend of
five years walked out of my life. The experience devestated
me utterly and completely. This poem served as a cleansing
tool for me. I hope it helps others as well.
