Millennium It shames me To think that with all of man’s progress What with all his ingenuity… His cellular phones, beepers and PCs … With all his advancement in technology And all the scope He has conquered for a better future… Man still can’t tame the beast… That primeval animal deep within That hungers for destruction and decay To satisfy his insatiable need for power; Man has come so far Yet he has not gone the distance…. To domesticate his wild animal magnetism From beastly passion to more humane desires That will tame the beast within; Much has changed within his world Yet much still remains the same Since the past two thousand years Greed still feeds man’s savage hunger for authority; O, Man….what have you learned In these past two thousand years of transformation? Surely you have not learned the most important lesson of all… With the coming of the Millennium What man must come to terms with Is his own place within the world We must learn to give back What we have taken And learn to live with what we have If there is a lesson to learn all these years Of suffering and strife; It is the lesson of penitence, reflection, humility.. We must take a moment of reflection And look upon this gift of life With much joy and appreciation And a sense of gratitude And look at all we have wasted With our futile efforts of greed and avarice In our conquest of victory, success, economic power; As the clock strikes twelve upon this century’s final hour As we look to a millennium of perpetual joy and hope Which will fuse the heart and soul of man And make him one with the universe We must greet the new Millennium With much joy and enthusiasm As we bury our old self And say goodbye to the past age Of covetousness and pride As we resurrect into a new and better creature That will embrace a new age and era In a more attractive and brighter Earth! —Mary Gonzalez©1998
Reason for writing:
I wrote this poem because I am inspired by the year 2000 and the aspect that man has not progressed as he should for these past 2,000 years. He still remains a inhumane creature like the first man on earth living in the forest primevil.Birth sign: Not entered
