HAVE YOU HEARD THE NEWS
A down-on-his-luck gambler
enters Mike's Market
knocking at opportunity's door
Cash in hand
he plans to inflate his ego
add bulk to his empty pocketbook
He purchases 20 chances on life
hurries off to his car
Inside the frayed old Jaguar
he removes the keys from the ignition
anxious scrapes metal across destiny
Pasteboard after pasteboard falls
loser after loser piles up
creating a worthless cache on the rusted floorboard
A frustrated 9mm screams at midday
The police arrive
shake their heads
The Medical Examiner shows
declares him dead
The tattered brim of his panama
pushes against the bloody steering wheel
It's bizarre
a scene straight from an old Beetle's song
He blew his mind out in a car
the English army has just won the war...

Reason for writing:
A playwright friend of mine from Dallas called me related the story of this guy that blew his brains out after purchasing losing lottery tickets. Jack knows I love street happenings and was curious to see what kind of poem I could come up with. Above is the result of my effort to capture a desperate man's final fling.
