THE MAPLE TREE

PATRICIA ANN REILLY

I planted a sprout of a maple tree
It was slender and barely measured two feet
Year by year its beauty and splendor developed by degree
Until one summer it was huge enough to shelter one from the heat.

My son was just a baby when the tree was placed in the ground
And as my son grew strong in body and spirit, so did the tree's gait
The limbs and trunk spread silently on both child and tree without a sound
Beauty, strength and splendor, together nature and child shared these traits.

And now, my precious Matthew, we plant this new tree,
with your brothers Paul and Jack, and your sister Sheila,
Mom, relatives and friends--
Your life was short and full of sadness, we know you are
finally at peace -- this tree is a symbol of hope today
and we know we will join you in heaven where all tears
and sorrows are ended, and real life begins anew.

We love you, We miss you. You will be in our hearts
until we meet again.

Reason for writing:

I wrote this poem to my son. the first part was written to
remember him as a child. The second part was written for
his memorial service which included planting another
maple tree in his memory. Matt. I love you and miss you.
