Why Haughty

by Mohammad Huwaidi - Not entered

Who never treads soil with bare feet
will touch dirt with soft cheek.

One is only six feet underground, but extremely beyond reach.

If layers of ground were excavated, none will know the master from
the slave.

Reason for writing:

This was written in 1989 for an English Poetry class in Tulsa uni
versity. It was submitted by the class professor to a contest and
made it to the final printings. This was inspired from an Arab
pundit who came up with similar ideas long time ago.

Some cultural background is required in order to understand the
meaning of this poem. In the Islamic culture, whenever someone
dies, one is buried into one's grave without a coffin. One's face
would be opened. A sand pillow is made in order to rest the right
cheek over. Therefore, no matter how one is too good to step over
the ground, one will face the same fate as everybody else.
