Sobriety

by Julie R. Chatman - Not entered

Hello my friend, it’s me.
Been a while, how have you been?
How has your world been treating you?
Have you lived the life you were seeking way back when?
Me? I’ve been doing well; but I want you to know…

Life has played some wicked games with my heart,
But through it all, I remained strong,
Fought those monsters ‘til I was whole again.
I regained control of my life and my heart.
The journey was long and hard,
Many nights I spent questioning the purpose
Of these monsters who refused to leave.

I woke up one day and realized,
That with the love and support of family and friends,
I could conquer all.
I simply needed to wake up and see,
That all along, the power was within me.

The love I once felt went away,
A sadness remains with me always.
But now I’m feeling a new kind of love,
For a life that refuses to allow,
The monsters to return and haunt me again.
The strength my new life echoes around me,
Keeps my mind, heart and soul complete.

The kids are doing well; growing up before my eyes,
They’ve learned to accept the hand that life has dealt them.
Their love for me is unconditional, as mine is for them.
And with that bond between us, it wasn’t long before they knew,
That it was the monsters who lead my way all those years.

I asked for forgiveness and what I received,
Was an understanding, words simply cannot describe.
Yes, the monsters caused some damage;
But I know in my heart of hearts,
That the love I possess within me,
Will always keep me afloat and able to live.

You say you understand, but I have to insist,
That the distance between us,
Kept you safe from the storms the monsters and I created.
I hid myself from you, not wanting you to see,
The selfish, angry and hateful me I had become.
Twenty years have passed since we first met,
I’m sure we’ve both made mistakes, done things we regret.
But the past is behind us, and tomorrow is a new day.
I now live my life as if today is my last;
I love as much as I can, enjoy the world around me,
Because I know that someday soon,
A new breed will find me and take me away.
But I also know that next time, they won’t be monsters;
Instead, they will be Angels from Heaven;
Sent down to guide me,
To a world where evil has no meaning,
And I will live through eternity with foggy memories,
Of those monsters who failed to destroy me.

Reason for writing:

    Written for a friend I haven't seen in over 15 years... I thought it would be a nice way to tell her what I've been up to.
