INVADERS OF THE NIGHT

INVADERS OF THE NIGHT

In the quiet darkness, raiders
pound at the portals of the mind

Whirling in ever increasing intensity
they attack
punching holes in the newly, loosely woven
serenity encasing cerebral operations.
Tearing a tiny opening, the rushing torrent
then barges across the threshold
of the drowsy idle brain

In the tiny cranial cavity
chaos reigns unchallenged.
Tiny entities chase each other
in circles, spirals, and other errant paths.
Cares are strewn, flung and
sent aloft in a stinging blizzard

The coveted kernel of peace, repose
pushed out of reach
buried by the forceful raging storm

The chaotic siege continues unabated
Until
From the outer darkness, a fuzzy blanket
slowly, and in undulating waves,
descends
muffling, muting
the intractable and fractious raiders

The descending blanket gradually
dampens the rampant energy.
In random pops and rumbles
activity finally ceases.

The inky, fluffy peace now controls
both outer and inner space
To command a while, undisturbed by nothing

Till on the scene comes stealing
the banishing rays of
DAWN

Reason for writing:

Lying almost on the verge of sleep, yet beset by an ever increasing
array of cares and thoughts, I thought that this feels just like
I am being invaded. The poem came about as a way of describing\
this.
