Reason for writing:
This poem was written in the late eighties after I got my 'voice' in poetry. Before then, even though I had been published in several places, my voice had not come forth to speak. I was friends for years with Adrienne Rich and she taught me a great deal about writing poetry and the voice that was to come. I listened to her, but I did not hear. But soon I realized what she was saying. Adrienne is probably one of the nation's best poets. She wrote a book of poems entitled 'Diving Into The Wreck'. I was always struck by her clarity of images and the bearing of her soul. After reading that book, I no longer had the notion that poetry was a personal thing. I realized that it was a personal experience that should be shared by all. Certainly my book 'After The Wreck' does not even make an attempt to come up to her level of poetic insight, but she certainly was responsible for getting me on the way. She will always have my deepest appreciation, respect and love.Birth sign: Aquarius
