Reason for writing:

This poem was written shortly after the Challenger disaster in 1986. I am an avid fan of space exploration and have had the pleasure of teaching two astronauts while they were at Cornell University Medical College (Ellen Shulman-Baker and Mae Jemison-the first black female astronaut). I gave Ellen a copy of this poem when she came to New York to speak at Cornell University Medical College in early 1986. I am still overwhelmed by the responses I received from other NASA astronauts after Ellen shared the poem with them.
