What man has looked beyond these eyes Into my dark unknown? This bland color is much despised By my own embittered groans. No fair sylph, falling flaxen hair... Eyes as blue as the Aegean Sea. There is no deep blue frigid glare, One dimensional and empty. No crystal cut dazzle bright seen, Faceted beauty prize; As an Irish lass with red hair a-gleam... No, I do not have emerald eyes... My eyes do not shift and change in time From gray, to blue, to green - Unsublime, dirt mud and slime Like cast away rotten beans. Do men look into my dirty irises And see a dirty soul? - Or, do they see lovely Isis'... Wanting to drink from these earthen bowls? My eyes in spirit reach forever Into a hollow of heavenly peace... Sparks of light do dissever As falling Autumnal leaves. In the glass of these eyes Are blown elements of four, Swirled and circular paths that lie Before my spiritual door. The formula for these plain seen eyes Is substance from the earth, Sturdy truth, forsaking lies... Sown from Adam's birth. Gentle, but strong etheric winds Blow and billow over this soil, To till the earth and bury sins; Reversed in this mortal coil. Springs well up and flood this land To sanctify my pain, God washes this away with His hand And microbursts of rain... And on this field my soul settles In eternal spirit of fire, Bright and hotter than whitened metal In flaming snakes of desire. It ribbons and twists in its form, Dancing pure in the dark. In my eyes the light is born From every yellow spark. Circular rings streaked with gold To hold these darkened orbs, That speak of the mighty tales of old, Castles, kings and lords. My eyes are older than you'll ever know, Yet, younger than you be, My eyes truly never do show What mysteries they see... But, if you look hard and peer Deeper into their depths, You will surely then be a seer; A beholder of my secrets... I promise you, you will die happy; If you so wish to drown, In the fire, earth and skies In my eyes Of brown. E.A.Altamura, Copyright 1999
