Our World, Our World

by Stephanie K. Lucas - Not entered

It is essential
to look at the human race
                 with penetrating eyes.
                   It is a phenomenon
               that astounds and mystifies.
               We are all mere silhouettes
in the faint lights of our existance.
We have been here for thousands of years
and have done nothing insignificant since.
                 Each and every culture,
                      individually,
               is strong enough to survive,
but when they integrate and colaborate
                       they thrive!
We need not dilute the differences
but realize that what we have
                     are nothing short
                      of priviledges.
                      Races, cultures,
                     ethnics and creeds
                       are what make
                    Our World, Our World
as we continue to plant The Seeds.
Seeds of freedom, seeds of unity,
seeds of pride and seeds of diversity.
From one corner of this vast land to another
                    we are joined uniquely
as friend, sister, foe and brother.
We will go forward and evolve as a society,
the population of this Earth in its profound variety.
                 Together, yet unconsciouly,
we place our feet on higher ground,
every time we take another step,
                 every time we turn around.

Reason for writing:

I wrote this poem in about 10 minutes. It was a last minute submission to a poetry contest in my Highschool.
My school is very multicultural. Recently we had multicultural week where we celebrated our differences!
On the firday of Multicultural Week we had a Multicultural Festival where students from various country's had sample foods, artifacts, clothing and other unique
aspects of their country's on display
in our gymnasium.
