Distant Love: A Sonnet

by PJ Leo - Not entered

In recent times your sweet, virtual face
Presented self to me as if a dream.
And though you did reside in cyberspace,
Expressive personality did seem
To light a light the likes I'd never viewed
Within me, one that felt so true and right.
Your probing intuition, never rude,
Made speaking of myself seem such respite.
And though our lives are separate, time and space
Do not prevent my sensing wishful glance;
With ordered life, in near yet distant place,
My thoughts are yours, despite our circumstance.
    And though I never may your fair face see,
    You give me honour sharing time with me.

Reason for writing:

    I had the good fortune of meeting a very special woman who lives in another city, in another country, only a couple of days' drive away but seemingly a lifetime away; both of us were married. Somehow, I knew that I could have a very special and deep relationship with this person, even before meeting her in person, yet because we were both otherwise involved, such a relationship was very unlikely to ever occur. The wonderful emotions she made me feel made me realize that even if we could not share our lives, we could enrich each other's for the better. I wanted to convey what she meant to me, to tell her how special she made me feel, that even though we were likely never to be, that she had made a difference in my life. Sonnets seemed to be (to me) the most romantic way to state my feelings: rich language, structure, and brevity somehow speak volumes more than the mere quantity of the words alone might otherwise allow. I am certain that I am not the only person to ever be in this situation, and I was so thrilled with how my friend inspired me to write such a wonderful work, I had to share it with you.

To B., you are as special to me as these words state, and more. I share a special part of my heart with you.
