Advice Unwanted

by Jessica Overturf - Virgo

It seems to me they don’t know,
How the times have changed,
The frustration inside continues to grow,
As my life before me is arranged.
They think they know what’s best for me,
And I cannot tell them no,
When I’m eighteen I will be free,
And my decisions will show.
I understand their reasons for wanting,
None of them have graduated,
I will not stoop to taunting,
But their morals are long past faded.
How can they try to tell me what’s best,
When times have changed so much,
They feel as though their words invest,
But the truth, they cannot touch.
They had their time to live,
As well as to decide,
Their advice, they shan’t give,
For in them, I can’t confide.
All I have to say,
Is that time will tell,
I will do things my way,
Despite how much they yell.

Reason for writing:

I wrote this poem mainly because I had to do a poetry portfolio for a class about a month ago. I hated poetry before that assignment was given, but while working on it, I realized that poetry was a good way to kinda let the world know you're pissed off at someone in your own kind of way... as this one was inspired by people always telling me how to plan my future based on how theirs came out.. and as much as they like to tell me they're stories... they need to face that the times are changed.
