Luminescence of Fear

by Rachel Ann - Gemini

A door you never knew existed opens
From it comes a shade of light you've never seen before
It intrigues and draws you to it like a magnet
Captivating and mesmerizing you with every step you take towards it's
overpowering glow
It's illuminating and brilliant, yet dizzying
Full of mystery and suspense
The closer you get, the more entranced you become by the splendor of it's glory

You're inches away and can feel the radiant heat it exudes as it shines down
upon you
Flooding you with warmth and emotions beyond expectation
You reach out to it
With that, it flickers madly
Your reflexes pull your hand back like a bullet in reverse
You pause, standing ever so still
All the while, within range of the effervescent rays it continues to emit,
now calm once again

You gaze upon this fascinating globe of vivacious energy and wonderment
Now, more inquisitive than before, you attempt another approach ever cautiously
And like the snapping beak of an angry mother robin who's nest has been disturbed,
a series of tremors is sent spiraling beneath the glass that entombs the frailty
of it's existence

You retract
Your hands held in the air as a sign that you hope will ensure this seemingly
protected, very guarded element that you mean it no harm
Gingerly, you move back to the door that earlier invited you in and the light
becomes calm once more
Only dimmer this time
With a feeling of sadness stretching between you
As you cross the threshold, you begin to gently pull the once inviting door shut,
only to stop half way
You remove your hand from the knob that could ultimately distance you from this
electrifying force forever

You take a deep breath and rest in your place for what seems an eternity
Looking through the opening you left behind in that doorway
With every ounce of your being, you slowly turn and walk away though it tears you
up inside
And then, you feel that magnificent, yet delicate light watching you and a feeling
of hope comes alive

Still you continue on

Knowing that the door has yet to be closed, you question your decision
Though you may feel as though you are abandoning it, you are not
More so, giving it the time it needs to regenerate
You remember the open door and that feeling of hope rushes through your body once
again
Your thoughts now lean toward the anticipation, however long it may take, until the
day that you come to see the light once again with the hope that it may still be
burning
