Within depths of water and salt, I am a sea horse, I am the strangest looking fish in the world, My horse's head, adjoining armor and prehensile tail depict me as a knight in a chess set, Swimming weakly, my dorsal fin propels me through space, My armor-like plates of bone protect me from predators, My eyes of innocence swivel independently or converge to grant me normal vision, Searching for food, I'm partial to planktonic crustaceans, Using my long tubelike mouth, I suction sea water and my supper, In my culture, a reversal of sex roles is commonplace, Males bear a marsupial pouch, while females deposit eggs, Hatching in 10 days, fertilized eggs soon become sea horses, For such a small animal, I certainly am odd in structure, function and behavior, Am I really all that different from you? I'm proud to be alive, Are you?
Reason for writing:
The ocean and its life forms are breathtakingly refreshing,
especially to the youthful generations. No greater form of
education and awareness exists in place of the vast sea.
Animals and plants have feelings too. It's time we stop
fighting among ourselves and appreciate what we do possess
in life. Only then will we be at peace with ourselves.
