Hatred burning in your eyes Revolt and disgust so blatantly displayed For what? I ask silently as I return your stare And why? Why so repulsed with the sight of a race so different from your own In the country you claim is YOURS. YOUR country???!!! I beg your pardon, dear sir But I don't recall… By what standards do you claim what is yours And what is mine as well… Because you live here, work here And strive to build a life for yourself? Well I have news for you….so do I And so does everyone around you. No matter what race, no matter what color, We are all here for a reason. And yet you stand there and mock us, Ridicule and cajole Spitting and cursing, Freely exercising your so-called freedom of speech. Allow me to exercise my own… You who claim to be so righteous Have neglected to see past The ignorance that binds you The bigotry that has masked your thoughts And the senseless hatred that has blurred your vision. I have one more thing to say… By YOUR standards This country is our country… YOURS and MINE So pray tell, dear sir If I, a person of color Was to ask YOU What YOU are doing in MY country What would be YOUR reply?!
