Ode to the Rain

by Kristina Harris - Aries

I have seen the rain drip off the faces of smiling children.
They splash in pool-like puddles
and dance through spongy backyards,
Without a care in their naive,
precious little minds to stop them.

I have seen the rain pound on fancy umbrellas,
women with high heel shoes tugging at their panty hose,
Checking their hair on street corners
as the rain splashes in their eyes, smearing their mascara.

I have seen the rain splash on a crowd of mourners.
Blending the tears away with each falling drop,
Bringing darkness to the already gloomy affair,
as the minister reads a final passage through drenched lenses.

But I truly love the rain on sleepless nights,
lying in bed with my eyes peeled.
The drops begin to fall on my roof..
until they are the only audible sound.
It is soothing, almost hypnotic,
and my heavy eyelids soon close.
My worries fade away like memories
lost in a cloud of weariness,
And all that encompasses my mind
are the rhythmic thumps tapping on my ceiling,
Summoning me that it is time to sleep.

All is right with the world...
as long as the rain continues to fall.
The best lullaby that mother nature can sing...
and the only one I know by heart.
