"What happened?", he asked as he lay on the bed The life-giving tubes in his arms, chest, and head. The days into weeks turning ever so slowly No knowledge of time does he have--so he told me. "What happened?", he asked as we stood there unknowing "It's the changing of the guard, Dad, the angels are coming." He looks up to heaven--we don't see what he sees--- "The angels are coming--they're coming for me." We wait and we pray to do the right thing For this man whose life is a precious blessing To us, his family, we draw close together To decide the finale--in God's hands it's better. And, so as the clock ticks the sickening seconds We wait again--for the heavens to beckon "Come on home now, dear brother, for your work here is done The angels are coming---they're guiding you home." His heart beats in measure as machines are shut down. We give our "goodbyes" and look all around For someone, somewhere to give us the answers. "What happened?" we'll think to ourselves ever after. "Don't leave us!", we cry in our hearts--all are broken "We need you and love you"--these words are unspoken. It's the changing of the guard, now he draws his last breath "It's your turn, my dear ones, now go, do your best.
Reason for writing:
I wrote this in memory and grief for my father-in-law who was a great leader and teacher for his family. He was a christian man who actually was able to build a church for the Lord. He was 59 years old. We miss him terribly, but we know where he is. Thank God!
