*A sestina is a poem where 6 words are repeated at the end of each line in a specific order.* Sestina He was looking at her, standing there so still, With nothing in his eyes to suggest the love She felt for him. It was a look that made her want to cry, A look she had come to know From so many others who wanted to be free, Not noticing in front of them what they already have. But he doesn't want what is in front of him. He wants to have More. He understands the pain it will bring her, but still, He has an overwhelming desire to be free, Free from her, free from her love, So great, one she had only too briefly come to know, Later, she stood outside and heard the cry Of a bird in the sky, flying, in a way she could not have Dreamed. She wonders will she ever again know What it is like to be so close to someone; still, She is almost afraid to be that close, to be in love; Being confined and at the same time being free. Time passes; she wonders why she can't be completely free Why she is still restrained, why she still cries In the night. And desperately searches for the love She lost. Will she ever again have The chance to care so much, will she still Remember the good, she doesn't know. Why she still wants him, she doesn't know She too has a strong desire to be free To escape a memory that haunts her still And unlearn the lesson that made her cry She knows what she wants but realizes what she cannot have Somehow she will survive, and she doesn't need his love.
Reason for writing:
This poem is really personal to me, it is about two people
I had relationships with-one was a relationship of physical
love, the other was what I felt to be real love. I lost
both of these relationships and I lost a lot of myself
through them, but I'm slowly learning to leave it behind.
