Old For New

Old For New

The Millenium is near, and hopes are high
How fast precious days each whisper goodbye;
With the Christmas lights countdown clocks appear
Silent heralds of a glorious new year.

Timelines, deadlines and special helpdesk lines,
One and all display their “Y2K” signs;
While nations prepare for the new unknown
Our future reflects the past we have sown.

Ecosystems linger, fleeting and frail,
Attitudes and actions stamping their trail,
Sweet sunny smiles, and those that might have been,
The quiet deeds, both the seen and unseen...

New year’s resolutions … just a child’s dream?
Transient and temporary they may seem …
The impossible … with God can come true
Forgiveness, love and perseverance too.

Set your sights beyond the fireworked skies
May stars remain in our hearts and our eyes;
Resolve today to make tomorrow bright
May we all rejoice when clocks strike midnight!

Reason for writing:

    We are fast approaching an historic moment when we will move into a new Millennium and a new era for mankind. Though some may prefer indifference, I look forward to celebrating the event, together with the rest of our nation, with hope and enthusiasm. Here is a poem that I have just completed to commemorate the Millennium and to wish all our readers the best for the new year.
