Side by Side

by lauren - Taurus

Said one young foal to another,
As they romped in the morning sun,
What is it that we’re made to do,
When we leave this place.
When we are grown and gone away
To romp these fields no more.

The other thought quite slowly,
He duller than the first,
I think what we are made to do
Was decided at our birth.
Yes, I think we are made to jump
And sometimes made to prance.

So we’re made to work for people,
The ones who work round here
To leave our land of childhood dreams
And learn the ways of man.
I hope that I happy in that place they take me to.

We will be, said the other,
I hope we stay the same,
Together like we’re meant to be
A team, one and the same-

Years later when the young wore off,
The two stood side by side-
Their work long done, their dues all paid,
They stood there on the knoll-
And watched the happy frolicking of two
Quite small young foals.

They watched with ample interest,
As the small two turned to talking,
About the plans their futures held and
things they’d have to do.
Just as the older two had done
A score of years ago.

They reminisced the happy times,
the chasing and the tag.
The pain with separation,
the joyful of the join.

And now those two who side by side
Watched the ages pass.
Lay there side by side,
On that grassy hill to watch the stars come out,
The pair has matching gravestones,
And matching memories.
Of happy times as tiny foals they spent running free.

Generations of passing times and others
Cross this space- none so good of friends
As those two quite had been.
I hope we share that kind of thing-
Me to you and I,
That those old geldings who took their
Years together,
Will always be remember as only one and
Never two.

Never were they alone,
Always side by side,
Even in their last moments-
As one watched the other fall,
He said, dear one we did it,
Passed it all together-
I can die a happy horse,
Yes, we did it all together.

Reason for writing:

friendship...and of course, i used horses because they are beautiful creatures...and true friendship is a beautiful thing
