Last Flight

by Andrea Freeman - Pisces

Foot by foot,
Step by step,
Ever so slowly she climbs.

The serene scent of rain is here.
She continues despite the warnings.

Above there is an absolution,
Above there is happiness.
Above there is truth.
Above there is peace.

On the way back down there are questions;
At the bottom there are answers.

So she thought.

Now is the calm before the storm.

She is stopped dead on the stairs
By a violent, shivering thought
Tearing its way through her,

"What happens if I should,
Perchance,
Survive this encounter?"

No answer.

Maybe that is the answer.

The surf swells.
Time grows short.
She must hurry before
The storm can prevent the deed.

The winds moan,
slightly more restless than before.

She walks again,
Quicker now.
Aware of the urgency.

As she nears the top,
Questions pelt her like hail;
"Why?"
"Where does it end?"
"Does it end?"

She will understand,
In time.

She slams into the door
Leading to the roof,
And throws it open,
Using all the strength she can find.

Lightning streaks the sky;
The rains pour down;
The storm has arrived.

She adds her own tears to the mixture,
Realizing it may be too late,
She may have waited too long.

She will soon find out.

Moving quickly,
She crosses the roof,
Daring only to steal only a glance
At her former world,
Her former life,
Before her focus returns to the task at hand.

She climbs over the lip,
Precariously perching herself atop the slick ledge
For only a second.

She steadies herself.
Now only her one final act
Stands between her and her final destination,
Inner peace.

Thunder cracks.

She slips.
She leaps.

Only a few drops of rain
Fall upon the corpse resting
At the end of her long journey.

The storm has spent its fury.

The sun shines through on the devastation
So carelessly left by its evil cousin.

Crowds begin to gather,
To stare.

This isn't quite the image foreseen,
But it is close enough.

Her worries have fled.
Her questions have resolved.

Maybe the world would be better
If more people sought answers.

She leaps
Away from her past.
Diving headlong into her future
With the raindrops accompanying her
On every step on the last leg of her quest.
Soon it will be over.

Soon she can rest.

She falls like a bird striking prey,
Though no bird dives for these reasons.

Lightning flashes a final time,
As if showing her the way.

Her mind suddenly clears,
Leaving only a single thought,

"How funny to feel such freedom
Just before the earth claims you."

There is no pain or suffering,

Only these words, which came from a place
Deeper than most can even begin to fathom,

There are only these last mortal thoughts
To keep her company
As the darkness envelops her.
