A Shoulder To Cry On

by Diane Calkins - Libra

You said you were my shoulder to cry on
Caring so deeply that it hurt you too
How could I resist
That beautiful smile and those emerald
eyes and crystal clear voice
That brightened my black days that were
once joyful.
You made me forget my pain and dried my tears,
maybe too much;
Feeling so much sympathy that you thought
you loved me
I, so stupid to have believed it was love
It was over before it even began.
Being with you was like heaven;
And I'd fight to keep it
But I was too difficult for you;
From sympathy came love, from love a burden.
You got rid of me for someone else,
To live your ironic story that is your life
Promising me the world and giving nothing
in return while I poured my heart out
Like a heavy stormcloud.
Here I sit alone and confused...
Now that I have no shoulder to cry on
Who will I turn to?

Reason for writing:

    This poem was inspired by my ex-boyfriend, who broke up with me recently. It was a sort of release from the pain that the breakup caused me. I just let all the hurt flow onto the paper.
