Mirror Image

by Georgia Davis - Gemini

Do you know the reflection in the mirror,
Or is that person a mystery?
If you know who that person is,
Tell me, who is it you see?

Do you see deep pools of thought,
Or do you see oblivion?
If you see nothing there,
Then something, truely, must be done.

Do you care about the world,
Or are you locked within your own?
Why lock yourself in solitude?
Try not to stay alone!

Do you see beauty?
Are you unique?
Or do you conform to society
So you won't be named a geek?

Do you, instead, see failure there?
Do you secretly cry?
Why must this be so, I ask?
Change yourself, just try!

Instead of failure,
Try happiness!
Instead of conformity,
Uniqueness is best!

You must get to know the spirit within.
It really is the only way!
If you do not, or cannot,
Then you may as well be dead today!

Reason for writing:

I transfer schools a lot. This means that every year, I'm stuck as being the new kid. I have to make a whole new set of friends, and learn a new way of doing things. I have learned that if I try to be who I am not, then I won't survive. Everyone does things differently, so conforming wouldn't really work. I have to be confident of whoI am, and let that show. I see lots of people who are scared or manipulated because they don't want to be unique. They think that if they're like everyone else then no one will bother them. Sometimes they're right, but in the long run, they're wrong. I have been laughed at before, but it doesn't phase me because I don't care about what others think of me. When people realize that I don't care if they laugh, then they stop, and some of those people have ended up being my closest friends! I wrote this poem to show other people the lesson I learned. People don't like being told this-they never listen, but if they read it, then it might get through to them.
