Seventeen

by Samantha Lowe - Scorpio

17 and still a disease
Adults treat her like she has no self-esteem
They abuse her with their bitter lies and rape her mind with uniformed rules.
When asked her opinion, she speaks but is left unheard
They hear only those in which they want to hear;
The words that she speaks are too honest and too true
They rise up above her, throwing her down on the ground
She's too young to know what she is talking about...
Too inexperienced to know what life is all about...
They disguise her voice in unheard songs.
She stands her ground and fights to be seen but invisibility takes supreme
The blind take over
The emptiness in which she feels thrives on their masks
She can't grow up until they want her to be seen.
She continues on...
Still a disease.

Reason for writing:

    I turned 17 this past halloween and despite recieving new responsibility of picking a college, a career, and so on, it seems as though anything I say to adults gets ignored. Due to my honesty and controlling manner, my teachers respect me very much especially those who have gotten to know me through my writing but as soon as I speak up about something that I really shouldn't know about at such a young age, they ignore me. The issues of alcoholism (my dad is an alcoholic), drugs (my friend overdsed), and cancer (in which I faced 3 times) are the types of things that I bring up and yet I'm shunned for asking for help and speaking the truth about them. It seems as though the only people adults listen to are those who are older and "more experienced."
