Drifting

by JK McKnight - Aquarius

MY LIFE IS LIKE A PIRATE SHIP SEARCHING FOR ITS CHEST OF GOLD
The objective is simple; getting there; a little more complicated
I'VE BROKEN SAILS, RUN OVER REEFS AND TORN HOLES IN THE BOWLES
I'm hard to maintain; what can I say?
THE SUNSETS ARE AMAZING BUT IT'S HARD TO SEE WHEN WATER IS ON SHORT SUPPLY AND SALTED MEAT IS GETTING STALE
Freedom is overrated when your Head holds you down
MY MIND SHIFTS GEARS FASTER THAN THE FISH I TRY TO CATCH
I'm sick of chasing lost Dreams and dealing with the Complexity of Life; can't figure out where to be or why;
cut and bruised, on a crutch and without shoes; My half- broken arm; shaken and alarmed;
reaching desperately for the Prize; God is on my side, or so the billboards say; Maybe I can beat out the millions
of others gliding towards the winning Ticket
SOMEDAY MY RAY OF HOPE WILL SHINE THROUGH THE DARK THUNDERHEADS ABOVE AND SOAK ME WITH INSPIRATION
The odds are in my favor; Stay positive; I can Win
UNTIL THAT DAY COMES, I'LL REMAIN A DELUSIONAL DRIFTER STARING AT THE SETTING SUN, DREAMING OF A NEW DAY
Reality can be depressing if you let your Ambitions get in the way

Reason for writing:

    My inspiriration for this poem came from being confused and frustrated
and trying to compare those feelings to something tangible (and life does kind of
seem liking a wandering ship sometimes). I guess I could say that this poem is about trying to live up to
your ego's rather large expectations and falling short.
