True Love's Maturity

True Love's Maturity

Behind the red wheelbarrow
a pasture lies
with a fence and a sparrow
atop hilly sky
A pathway through the middle
leading to a split in the way
some choose quick & some piddle
I find myself there each day
From fallin leaves
             to burnin' heat
Around obstructing trees
             under billowy sheet
I am there.

As a little boy I did not hesitate
To the left with my toy under the great oak shade
Soon my clothes did not fit and it was "cool" to steal
To the right with my mit, down to the old baseball field
Slicked hair, without a fear, an attitude & a fast car
To the left with an ice cold beer, a shortcut to the bar
Then I met her
In that plain white blouse
To the right with one flower
Over the fence to her house
Every day for 3 years I jumped that fence
All seemed so clear, I have loved her ever since
Now I stand here @ the split
Stare at the sparrow
Wonder why I quit
On the true love I know*
I concentrate too much on the past
totally losing touch of life's present cast
If we met in the future and started from there
I could be a much better suitor, our experience will make it fair
She went on her way
and so did I
I think about her every day
we said we'll try
It still seems that I am @ the split
and can not leave
and can not fit
until I loosen my sleave
To accept her decision and have her repect mine
Making one a division until the right time
If I do not let go
from what once was
I won't relearn what I already know*
what standing @ the split does

Reason for writing:

I gave this poem to my first true love when we broke up. I was young and felt that I needed to experience things on my own as I headed off to college. She read the poem very slowly and then looked at me with complete understanding. That was one of the first times I showed my poetry to anyone. The power of writing has been with me ever since.
